Intro. to The Peace Mom and the Patriot Tour

By John Heuer

In 2005, “Peace Mom” Cindy Sheehan ignited the US peace movement by camping out next to President George Bush’s Crawford Ranch in Texas.  Mr. Bush refused to meet with Cindy to answer her question:  “For what noble purpose was my son, Casey, sent to die in Iraq?”  Since that summer, Cindy has traveled the US and abroad exposing the myths that sent thousands of US servicemen and women to their deaths, as well as countless Iraqi civilians.  During her travels, Cindy was regularly vilified in the press, received countless death threats, and was hounded by false patriots claiming that she was a traitor who betrayed the honorable sacrifice of her son, Casey.

In 2007, Cindy challenged Democratic Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, who had taken the impeachment of George Bush and Dick Cheney “off the table.”  During this challenge, Cindy was ignored by the corporate press, despite heroic efforts to gain 10,000 signatures to qualify her for a place on the ballot as an independent candidate.  Nancy Pelosi, the darling of the Democratic Party, won re-election with 72% of the vote in California’s 8th District.

Since the 2008 election, Cindy has launched a national radio program www.CindySheehanssoapbox.com, and is the author of “Myth America—10 Greatest Myths of the Robber Class and the Case for Revolution”
Joining Cindy Sheehan for their first ever joint appearance will be Lt. Col Robert Bowman (USAF Ret.)  Col. Bowman is President of the Institute for Space and Security Studies and the recipient of the Eisenhower Medal, the George F. Kennan Peace Prize, and the President's Medal of Veterans for Peace.   He is one of the country's foremost authorities on national security.
Colonel Bowman flew 101 combat missions as a fighter pilot in Vietnam and directed all the Department of Defense "Star Wars" programs under presidents Ford and Carter.  His Ph.D. is in Aeronautics and Nuclear Engineering from Caltech. He has lectured at the National War College, the United Nations, Congressional Caucuses, the Academies of Science of six nations, and the House of Lords.
Dr. Bob Bowman ran for President in the Reform Party in 2000 and was the Democratic candidate for the US Congress from the 15 th Congressional District of Florida in 2006.  Bob’s website is www.thepatriots.us.
Bob and Cindy criticize both Republican and Democrat administrations, America’s wars, the war economy, the banking industry, the US torture regime that produced false confessions about the 9/11 attacks on the US, and much more

Report on The Peace Mom and The Patriot Tour
By: Wally Myers

“War is a racket. A few profit; the many pay.  So I say TO HELL WITH WAR!”  Our tour began with those thunderous words said by General Smedley Butler in 1935.  It ended with this warning from Martin Luther King Jr., “We can no longer afford to worship the God of Hate or bow before the altar of retaliation. The oceans of history are made turbulent by the ever rising tides of hate. History is cluttered with the wreckage of nations and individuals that pursued this self-defeating path of hate.”

The featured attractions were The Peace Mom - Cindy Sheehan and The Patriot – Colonel Bob Bowman.  Their message: America desperately needs a revolution of values.  For Cindy, it’s a wakeup call from the myths that blind us.  For Bob, it’s the restoration of our constitution.

This tour had its difficulties, but they were lessons in disguise.  Bob became ill after completing his second appearance.  Our peace-patriot was hospitalized and required a blood transfusion due to his contamination from Agent Orange 40 years ago while serving in Vietnam.  Our weapons of mass contamination are painfully slow and inexorable.  Cindy, who camped out at Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas after her son was killed in Iraq, had to put up with lies, character assassination, and a public demonstration by the war-patriots at her appearance at Brunswick Community College.  Imagine how painful it must be for a mother to have lost her son and to be called a traitor.  War-patriots make war on peace and this is how they support the troops – with hate, lies, and self-righteousness.

In her e-book Myth America, Cindy writes about attitudes that make a difference.  “We all care about our children, while some of us care about all the world’s children.  We all care about keeping our country and our community’s safe, while some of us want to keep everyone in the world safe.  We all want prosperity for our families, while some of us want prosperity for all.”  The attitude that holds that American children are better than Afghanistan’s children; that we will strike first on Iraqi  land in order to keep Americans sefe; that we need their oil resources for our prosperity is justified by the myth that “America is the greatest country in the universe.”

Lieutenant Colonel (retired) Bowman has seen through the myths and proclaims, “This war was not brought on by faulty intelligence. It was brought on by manipulated intelligence, doctored evidence, and deliberate deception. This war has nothing to do with national security or freedom or democracy or human rights or protecting our allies or weapons of mass destruction or defeating terrorism or disarming Iraq. It has to do with money. It has to do with oil. And it has to do with raw imperial power. It is based on a pack of lies. And it is wrong. Those who forced this war on an unwilling world are guilty of violating the U.S. Constitution, the UN Charter, the Nuremberg principles, and international law. What they have done is illegal, immoral, unconstitutional, and TREASON.”

With a sad touch of irony Cindy writes, “The Bush Administration kept on saying that the ‘terrorist’ attacked us on 9-11 because they ‘hate our freedoms.’  So, if one believes the official story, then our government has used 9-11 to destroy those freedoms that the terrorists hate.”

Our Peace Mom thinks that Obama, who taught Constitutional law, needs to restore those freedoms that Bush trashed for power.  She writes that Bush “took away our 4th Amendment rights to privacy by the FISA Modernization Act and our protections under the 1st Amendment with the USA Patriot Act and our protections under the 8th Amendment by the Military Commission’s Act.”  She stands for principles and she challenges us to demand that our freedoms be restored.

Our Peace-Patriot hopes for a change of direction from President Obama in Afghanistan.  “The war in Afghanistan is just as unnecessary and wrong as that in Iraq. The reason given for the invasion of Afghanistan was that they were harboring Osama bin Laden who (they said) was behind 9/11. But the Taliban leaders of Afghanistan offered to give us Osama bin Laden for trial if we had evidence against him. The Bush Administration ignored that offer because (1) they had no evidence linking bin Laden to 9/11 (and we still don’t) and (2) the attack on Afghanistan had been planned long BEFORE 9/11, because the Taliban had refused to let Unocal build a gas pipeline through their country. 9/11 was a handy excuse for Cheney and company doing what they wanted to do anyway. The entire “War on Terror” is phony – all of it.”

If some of this information comes as a surprise; then follow Cindy’s advice, “The only response to the ‘free press’ in the US is to turn off our TV news and support Internet news sites, radio shows (http://www.cindysheehanssoapbox.com/), or other independent media (http://www.thepatriots.us/ ).” Stay informed and keep up the pressure.

Veterans For Peace Chapters in Asheville, Charlotte, and the Triangle teamed up with NC Peace Action, 2 chapters of Code Pink, 2 chapters of NAACP, We are Change NC, and 2 congregations of Unitarian Universalist to bring the Peace Mom and the Patriot Tour to 5 cities in North Carolina.
