The Military Industrial Complex at Fifty

Understanding and Challenge

Jan 14 - 16, 2011 Guilford College, Greensboro

“Ike Was Right” – a free conference on the fiftieth anniversary of President Eisenhower’s 1961 speech warning of the rise of the Military Industrial Complex:
“In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. . . . We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.” President Dwight Eisenhower, January 17, 1961

The program will include presentations and papers on various aspects of the Military Industrial Complex (MIC) as a dominant factor in American culture, economics, politics, foreign and domestic policy, and even religion. Workshops will explore responses to the continuing presence and pervasive influence of the MIC.
